1968: Daddy's gone to the moon for Christmas

On Dec. 21, 1968, Apollo 8 and its astronauts - Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders - launched into space and over the course of their mission, became the first people to orbit the Moon.


Apollo 8 orbited the Moon 10 times, and on Christmas Eve, the crew made a TV broadcast reading the first 10 verses of the Bible's Book of Genesis. When this was broadcast, it was the most watched TV program of all time, seen by approximately one quarter of people alive at the time.
