China can log onto Gmail via third-party apps again

It appears that Gmail is once again accessible in China via third-party clients after a four-day blackout.


China blocked access to Google's popular email service on or around Dec. 26, according to data from Google and analysis from Dyn Research, after a gap in its Great Firewall was closed. But now, Google traffic data suggests that Gmail is back up and running in the country.



China had experienced serious disruptions in Gmail service since June, but users were still able to access Gmail through third-party clients such as Apple Mail. After the most recent Gmail blackout, users could only get around it through VPNs, or virtual private networks. VPNs shield Internet activity from Chinese government censors and don't show up in Google's traffic data because they are encrypted. Read more...
