With the development of a Supergirl series underway, CBS is leaping into the realm of comic-inspired TV that many of its competitors entered this season or earlier
See: Fox's Gotham, NBC's Constantine, Netflix's Marvel's Daredevil, ABC's Agents of SHIELD, and, of course, CW's duo of costumed heroes Flash and Arrow.
But can the home of NCIS and CSI properly serve the super needs of genre fans? CBS chairman Nina Tassler certainly thinks so because the network, she says, has a history of strong female characters
"As you can tell from the strength of the female characters we have on television, it's a real passion of ours," she told reporters Monday morning during a panel at the Television Critics Association press tour. "We heard the pitch to Supergirl, and we realized that she embodied so many of the qualities and the characteristics of classic female heroines on this network, and we think that it is a story and a coming‑of‑age opportunity for us."
