Ice floes coursed down Maine's Aroostook River on April 19th, after ice built up during the course of a harsh winter began breaking up as spring weather settled in. This comes after Maine's 12th coldest March on record, and one of its coldest months of February as well. The communities of Bangor and Caribou had their coldest Februarys on record, for example.

The winter was unusually cold in the Northeast, with frequent snowstorms, and a longer-lasting cold season than the region has grown accustomed to in recent years.
