Oscars for Best Picture Don't Mean Box-Office Gold

Films that win the Academy Award for Best Picture — arguably the most prestigious distinction of the entire Oscar ceremony — don't necessarily rake in the green at the box office.

In fact, the past 10 winners of the award, which include films such as Argo, The Artist and The King's Speech, made considerably less, on average, than the highest grossing films of the past 10 years. That may not sound so surprising, but the difference is jarring: Overall, the highest-grossing films from the past 10 years raked in $1.3 billion, compared to just $310 million from the Best Picture winners.
